PeanutPimpMama’s Grand Finale @ MAD SQUARE EATS 2014 (Fall Session)

PeanutPimpMama1-300x300We’ve officially passed “hump day” and that means we have ONE DAY left of MAD EATS for the season! (More like one meal) Why would you end a food event on a Thursday leaving peeps with no plan for Friday? Everyone I know has a flexible lunch on Friday! (Mind boggling) That said, I’ve decided to do one last post about all of the foodies before I start to write about “white girl favorites” like … PUMPKINs. Don’t worry, I won’t tell you about all of the fabulous yoga pants I just bought at lulu. Meanwhile, let’s check out the dishes that PeanutPimpMama had the pleasure of consuming. You better go out and get yours before it’s too late!

The Stand:

Mexicue is serving up Southern-Style BBQ-Mexi-Fusion!

Mexicue Sign

The snack:

PeanutPimpMama ordered: The Kale and Quinoa Bowl -including kale, blackened brussel sprouts, corn salsa, slow-simmered black beans with cotija cheese in a creamy chipotle sauce.

On The Side: Green Chili Mac N’ Cheese

image

The Thoughts:

The kale and quinoa bowl was everything I hoped and dreamed it would be. There’s just something about all of those fibrous irony-greens that will make any girl’s eyes glow. The charred brussels were a nice contrast to the creamy chipotle sauce, and just a sprinkle of cotija cheese and sweet corn gave it a hint of salt which balanced out those slowly-simmered black beans that tend to take over. All of that deliciousness combined with another protein packed superfood and this partial-veggie was sold! It was a well balanced meal packed with nutrients for under $15.00 that kept me sustained well into the evening. All the good I did with my Mexi-Bowl I surely undid with their Green Chili mac n’cheese. My macaroni was OTT creamy that any sign of green chili was lost. (Quick someone grab the sriracha!)

The Snack:

Regretting there was no sign of Birthday Cake Truffles left, I begrudgingly chose the Apple Pie Cake…

image

The Thoughts:

These truffles were pretty self explanatory for a Milk Bar patron. Sadly I have only been to the East Village location once and I’m excited to hear they have ventured off to new locations of NYC. I have been lucky enough to have these magical treats on the dessert menus of various Momofuku restaurants. I felt like I could have easily popped these apple-cinnamon balls in the oven and they would have turned into the most amazing biscuits of my life. The essence of apple and cinnamon was so strong it felt like Thanksgiving Dinner. I had that gobstopper moment where I could finally taste the buttery crust. It was really hard to make it through to the third one as truffle one and two slowly lost utility. They were so compact you could use them as weapons of self defense… Slingshot anyone?

The Stand:

Another restaurant on the run… You have to access their website to see where they’ll be next! (Bandits)

Takumi Taco is serving up Japanese inspired Mexican street food… There was a line, it’s true.

image

The Snack:

Spicy Tuna Taco: Sashimi grade big eye tuna, jicama, avocado, cucumber, spicy mayo, tucked inside a crispy gyoza shell

Spicy Shrimp Taco: Shrimp, corn salsa, avocado, scallion, chipotle aioli, tucked inside a crispy gyoza shell

image

The Thoughts:

The Market Greens were a waste of space. I was into the charred corn salad which had shishito peppers, cilantro, edamame, avocado, Thai basil, shiso, and wasabi citrus dressing. It might have actually been my favorite part of the entire meal. I was also excited to be sitting on the lawn with my friend on one of our last warm and sunny days of the year. They do have Sriracha on the counter and offer gluten-free options.

The Stand:

Baaaaaaaahahahhahahah! (That’s all.)

image

The Snack:

One of a couple Ball-Purveyors out there…They make balls with mix and match sauces and toppings that all seemingly suit each other. I’m not sure you could make their balls taste bad (even if you wanted to).

image

The Thoughts:

While I believe that two balls are certainly enough for me, Mighty Balls come in threes. While three is company, you get to try a whole other sauce and topping which certainly is a great incentive for overcrowding. They also offer their balls in pork in addition to beef along with their veggie balls (for those who would rather abstain from carnivorous consumption). If you like saucy balls and would like to sauce your own balls at home, they sell their specialty sauces over-the-counter for your take home enjoyment!

The Stand:

They have a box and they have a stand.

image

They are well versed in social media. PeanutPimpMama loves to engage in friendly banter with them!

image

They have healthy concept with Mediterranean inspiration. That deep fryer tho…

image

The Snack:

I oredered The Brussel Sprouts, A falalfel sandwich and hummous. (Girls gotta eat.)My eyes were certainly bigger than my stomach as I walked away with an entire basket of food heavy enough to feed me for a week at least.

image

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I opened up the brussel sprouts. It was that moment you feel like all your friends that worked in this area had been holding out on you the whole entire time. This container easily had 1000 calories (no joke). I watched as they chucked them in a deep fryer to char them, strained them into a metal bowl consisting of fig jam and sherry vinegar for a toss, then finally dropped them into this cardboard box (pictured above) where they were lathered with mint yogurt and walnuts and finally crowned with some juicy red grapes. This might possibly be the most indulgent side of brussel sprouts I have had in my life. This could have been my meal alone.

image

Then I did this to myself- I ordered the Falafel Beiruti with pickled turnips, tahini, parsley and tomatoes. I was still hungry ya know…Those pickled turnips were a delightful surprise. (PPM loves anything pickled.)

image

The Thoughts:

Too much food for PeanutPimpMama… I needed two coffees to get through the afternoon. Zzzzzzzzz

The Stand:

What is up with “The Eye”? I finally got to try Roberta’s after all the hype. It lived up to it to be fair.

image

The Snack:

There were a good amount of pies to choose from. I decided to go with ‘The Famous Original” because it had some Grana Padano and chili on it along with the fresh mozzarella. YUM! The meat eater in my totally wanted “The Bee Sting” which includes some sopresata chili and honey!

image

The Thoughts:

While their pizza was downright awesome at a stand, I’d love to try it in BK next time my friends recruit. It’s good to have friends in BK.

Finally…

I decided to end my MAD EATS season on a sweet note with two cannolis from Stuffed Cannoli. To the left we have “Peanut butter Cup” to the right we have “Birthday Cake”.

The Thoughts:

I’m going to lose so much weight now that MAD SQUARE EATS is gone for the season. Until next time!

Just think… Next time we see you we will have survived the winter and ditched our parkas once more.

“Treats”- Sweet Treats Truck NYC

I was happy to escape out of my building’s 45th street exit to find my falafel man’s new neighbor.  “Treats”.  No mystery here… They are a big silver truck that sells treats! They also offer breakfast and lunch, including egg sandwiches, their daily grilled cheese special as well as salads.  I came to find out that this is only in their store (not the truck).  When I saw the truck earlier today, I talked the owner into getting those grilled cheese sandwiches into that truck STAT.  They are losing potentially thousands of dollars not having those ready-to-go on demand in Midtown Manhattan.  She smiled and shrugged and said, “That’s the next step”. Once they do, it will really be a one stop shopping place with a huge selection of dessert to boot!

During my first encounter, I spent a bit of time scoping out the dessert selection.  I’ll be honest and say that upon first glance not many of their treats get the “Golden Star” for visual appearances.  However now having sampled their pumpkin loaf as well, the freshness is commendable. Staying true to my October promise of sampling as many Fall and Pumpkin products as I can, I settled on the pumpkin swirl cookie..  This was easy after the guy in front of me wanted to know what it was. He piqued my curiosity and it was history.  It was not an obviously pumpkiny-product to start.  In fact, before I was told what was inside, I swore it had peanutbutter drizzled on top.  PeanutPimpMama would have been equally pleased by that, however the fact that it was pumpkin made it all that much more special.

The cookie:  It was the consistency of a slightly chewy shortbread with cinnamon goodness rolled into the dough, just as a cinnamon roll would be rolled. The cookies were then sliced so the decorative swirl remained face up.  Last but not least, it was drizzled with a pumpkin icing where the prominent pumpkin flavor exuded.  The cookie was very sweet, and I made the mistake of eating it before I had any real food in my system.  I did not make it all the way through, as the cookie proved to be way too much of a mid morning commitment. Where the remains lie, no one knows.

Next time, I’m going for the grilled cheese. Hopefully they’ll have it!

Now you know!

The Cupcake Crew- “Cupcakery” Truck, NYC

Let’s talk about something that has been on every New Yorker’s mind in the last year…. How about all of these fancy schmancy foodie trucks?!

I returned to the Bryant Park area in August when I started working on 45th Street and 6th Avenue. At first being reluctant to leave the office without a manager chasing me to take my mandatory-temping-break, I was slow at getting into the local lunch scene. After all, I was previously an “East-Side-Girl’. Working literally on top of a Cafe Europa, it has been my convenient resort most days with their pasta station, salad bar and decent soup selection. It is by no means anything to “write home to Mom about.”

My buddy working a couple blocks north, turned me on to the rapidly emerging food-truck culture right here in mid-town Manhattan. Most of which can be found on 49th or 50th (changing daily) or right in Time Square where you’ll find the likes of “Rickshaw Dumpling” and “Nuchas Empanadas” regularly. Yesterday I left the office in hopes to have a repeat offense at the Red Hook Lobster truck which I knew was soon to be re-introducing their seasonal lobster chowder. Sadly it was nowhere to be found, but lucky for me I stumbled across this gem instead!

I was instantly drawn to their black truck with very puffy pink font and Nesquik promoters giving out free Nesquik along with (what I received) free Nesquik key-chains. As I got closer and closer I saw that they had all of their flavors written on a chalk board including salted caramel, baileys with mocha cream, red velvet and caramel nut brownie. While it was challenging to read from a distance, the word pumpkin just bounced right off!  Just like that, I was instantly sold… Cha-ching*

Of course I started snapping pictures all over the place out of sheer excitement. Our very own cupcake truck in mid-town manhattan with innovative flavors!  It was also nice to see something “home made” and not the typical brands we’ve grown to abuse as NY’ers that have turned into the snootiest of “cupcake connoisseurs”.

Speaking as one,  I’ve seen other attempts at cupcake trucks before in this city…ones that look like impostors; containing plastic-like cupcakes manufactured by the masses and sold as early evening snacks by the same guy that has the 6:00am breakfast truck.  In my mind he is also the kebab guy.  He has a couple of costumes and shifts he changes throughout the day. (If you love cupcakes, you know exactly who I’m talking about!) You know the truck with that generic cupcake sign, with the vendor of the very dry little treats they try to pass off as the “real deal”.  It’s insulting our intelligence…

Although I was really in this experience for the pumpkin, I saw that the minis available were sold at 3 for 5 dollars. That of course was the gateway for trouble and an excuse to try more flavors. (The justifications that go through your mind when you start a food blog.) In the end I walked away with three little guys all wrapped up in wax paper and a complimentary “Maple Bacon Mini”. It was a gift as a token of appreciation for my first time visiting.

I told the pleasant cupcake salesman about my blog. He thanked me and told me “We’re here every Wednesday.” I assured him I’d let people know as I walked off happily with my wrapped up pals, flicked the bacon garnish onto the ground and bit blindly into my freebie pretending not to taste the bacon bits  lurking below. In spite of my veggie friendly diet, I couldn’t help but love this tiny culinary bite and was inspired to create my own future breakfast cuppie recipe!

I wasn’t too fond of the whole wax paper thing since I wanted to take their picture with their happy little frosting tops. Needless to say I was sad when I finally got them back to my office and they had been clearly affected by their waxy shield. The Cupcake Crew desperately need to work on getting a sectioned take-away box for the protection of their minis (in particular). No one wants their cupcake icing crushed before they get to take their first bite. Fact.

The Cupcake Casualties Included: Salted Caramel, Pumpkin Maple Cream and Baileys Mocha Cream

Don’t forget to keep a lookout for The Cupcake Crew when that 3 PM sugar crash hits. Just remember you have culinary sweets right at your office’s front door! Stop by this Wednesday and pick up a pumpkin flavored mini in honor of PeanutPimpMama’s fabulous suggestions. Don’t worry, I’ll keep em’ coming!
